Porsche 917 by Walter Näher. A Book Review by Marcel Haan. Was it Steve McQueen in the movie LeMans that gave the 917 it’s iconic status?
Well he sure contributed to that but the Porsche 917 is by many seen as the best race car of its' era.
Driver Mark Donohue said [quote] “At this time, there is nothing in the world any quicker, any better handling, and more advanced technically and any more fun to drive. It is to me the perfect racing car.”
With this quote author Walter Näher starts off his book on the Porsche 917 with an Archive and Works Catalogue. It is not often that you come across a book that can be considered the final book on a given topic. But for the Porsche 917, this is it when it’s about production and technical details.
The book starts with all the blue prints of the several chassis numbers. Followed by the details on each specific car, when it was made and in which races it drove and the history of it’s owners up to 2014. Some are in Museums, others in private collections.
Developing a race car is a unique process with so many dynamics. Getting an insight into those dynamics makes you respect the impressive skills of the Porsche engineers even more.
The results at the races taught the engineers a lot and the Porsche team kept improving the car. And we all know it’s victories.
Porsche 917 is an excellent book and in itself a collector’s item for the real Porsche race fans.
